Istruzioni per l’uso. Festival cinematografici, formazione e pratiche educative

organised by Marco Dalla Gassa, Andrea Gelardi e Federico Zecca
Trieste, 23 January 2024

As part of the 35th Trieste Film Festival, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and the University of Bari “Aldo Moro,” with the support of the Consulta Universitaria Cinema and the Associazione Festival Italiani di Cinema, present Istruzioni per l’uso, a study day devoted to the role of film festivals in educational and cultural activities, the shaping of taste, and the dissemination of political and social awareness—both historically and in the contemporary context.

The programme is structured around two main areas of inquiry. The first part of the day examines the micro-histories of film festivals, offering case studies that include, among others, a reconstruction of Jean Rouch’s Turin workshops and an exploration of the audience education initiatives promoted by the Unione Nazionale Cinematografie Specializzate (National Union of Specialised Cinematography) during the 1960s and 1970s.

The second part of the day turns to contemporary perspectives, addressing film education policies within LGBTQIA+ communities, mapping funding strategies for educational initiatives at festivals in Apulia, and, in the field of media literacy, examining educational models developed in the Veneto region. The programme will also feature a round table on the relationship between film festivals and audience education, as well as the presentation of PRIN 2022 “RIFF – Reframing Italian Film Festivals”, a project dedicated to the collection, digitisation, and study of Italian film festival archives.
